New Report Shows Linux Adoption Growing To Support Cloud And Mission Critical Workloads

The Linux Foundation, the
nonprofit organization dedicated
to accelerating the growth of
Linux, today announced the
findings of its 2013 Enterprise
End User Report, “Linux Adoption:
Third Annual Survey of World’s
Largest Enterprise Linux Users.”
The study conducted in
partnership with Yeoman
Technology Group tracks the
growth of Linux use in large
enterprises and identifies key
trends that inform Linux operating
system priorities.
Key findings from this year’s
report show the world’s largest
enterprises are increasing their
investments in Linux for the third
consecutive year.
Industry reports for the most
recent quarter (4Q12) show that
while overall server revenue is
only growing at 3.1 percent year-
over-year; Linux experienced 12.7
percent year-over-year growth for
the quarter while Windows only
increased 3.2 percent and UNIX
was down 24.1 percent. The
Enterprise End User Report helps
to inform the industry about what
is driving this adoption and how
market growth is shaping up for
the future.
Enterprise organizations identify
Linux as the dominant platform
for cloud computing
technology with nearly 76 percent
using Linux servers for cloud and
74 percent planning to maintain
or increase Linux use for future
cloud initiatives. In the area of
new applications, services and
greenfield deployments, more than
75 percent of organizations report
deploying Linux in the last two
years.
A dramatic increase in the use of
Linux for mission critical
workloads has grown consistently
year-over-year to reach 73
percent in 2013. Reliance on
Linux for cloud and big data is a
strong contributing factor. And,
the future looks bright for the
operating system with 80 percent
of the world’s largest enterprises
planning to increase their use of
Linux servers over the next five
years, while the number who plan
to purchase Windows servers is at
an all-time low of 20 percent.

Biggtest Cyber Attack In History Slows Down The Global Internet

The internet
around the globe has been slowed
down in what security experts are
describing as the biggest cyber-
attack of its kind in history.
“Based on the reported scale of
the attack, which was evaluated
at 300 Gigabits per second, we
can confirm that this is one of the
largest DDoS operations to date,”
online security firm Kaspersky Lab
said in a statement, “There may
be further disruptions on a larger
scale as the attack escalates.”
It is having an impact on popular
services like Netflix – and experts
worry it could escalate to affect
banking and email systems.
Spamhaus, a group based in both
London and Geneva, is a non-
profit organisation that aims to
help email providers filter out
spam and other unwanted
content.
To do this, the group maintains a
number of blocklists – a database
of servers known to be being used
for malicious purposes.
Recently, Spamhaus blocked
servers maintained by
Cyberbunker, a Dutch web host
that states it will host anything
with the exception of child
pornography or terrorism-related
material.
Spamhaus said it was able to
cope as it has highly distributed
infrastructure and technology in a
number of countries.

Android Powered $99 Ouya Games Console Shipped To First Supporters

A new games
console which industry experts
say could disrupt the industry has
begun shipping to kickstarter
backers who helped the Android-
based project get going last year.
For the rest of us, there’s an
official retail release date: June 4.
Games on the system will be a
fraction of the cost of traditional
console games, more comparable
to those found on mobiles and
tablets.
However, it may struggle to
muscle in on a market dominated
by big players such as
PlayStation and Xbox, one analyst
predicted.
The Ouya was financed using
crowdfunding website Kickstarter,
where it attracted over $8m
(£5.3m) in funding from 63,416
backers.
The company has begun sending
out consoles to the first
supporters of the project – while
other interested gamers can pre-
order the device.
About 55 games will be available
with today’s release, according to
[Ouya founder Julie] Uhrman. The
cube-shaped player uses a
version of Android that requires
developers to create applications
and games just for the device.
Games must be free, offer a free
trial or have free add-ons, the
company said. … Ouya plans to
keep 30 percent of game sales,
with developers getting the rest.

Chelsea goalkeeper reveals post- game texts after wonder-save Chelsea news: Petr Cech won the plaudits of his fellow pros after super-save against Man Utd

Petr Cech has revealed he received
texts from fellow players and
goalkeepers after his sensational
save denied Javier Hernandez in
Chelsea's 1-0 FA Cup win over
Manchester United on Monday.
Chelsea took the lead at Stamford
Bridge yesterday thanks to a
superb goal from Demba Ba, but
Hernandez looked set to level
things up after getting on the end
of Danny Welbeck's cross in the
second-half.
The Mexican striker looked
destined to score only for Cech to
keep his side in the lead with a
brilliant flying save.
The win means Chelsea are still on
course to retain the cup they won
last season and they face
Manchester City in the semi-finals
at Wembley later this month.
The Blues have Cech to thank for
that, and the 30-year-old revealed
after the game that his fellow pros
had been in touch to congratulate
him for pulling off the wonder-
save.
‘It was a great ball from the wing
and Javier did well to direct the
ball into the goal,’ he told
Chelsea's official site. ‘I went as
fast as I could and left my left arm
to do the job. I tried to cover as
much space as I could and luckily I
was able to reach it.
‘I knew before the cross came that
Hernandez was there, so I knew I’d
have to be really quick to get
there, that’s what allowed me to
make the save. You need to have
awareness of the people around
you as it helps you make the right
decision.
‘It was an important moment in
the game, I’m sure a lot of people
could already see the ball in the
goal, so I was glad I got enough
on it to push it over.
‘I got a few messages from other
players and keepers, it’s great that
people can appreciate the save.
Even in the first half with the shot
from Hernandez, when the ball
moved away from me, it was a
scary moment and it took a lot of
energy for me to kick the ball
away, so I’m pleased with the way
I played.’
If Chelsea make it all the way to
final against either Wigan or
Millwall, they will be in with a
chance of winning their 5th FA Cup
since 2006.
‘We seem to have a special
relationship with the FA Cup,"
Cech continued . "We treat it with
respect, every season we try to win
it and we get something back. We
have another tough game against
City, but it’s a semi-final so you
expect a tough game.’
‘It’s always important to beat big
teams for the confidence. ‘We are
not having such a fantastic season
in terms of the league, but t shows
we can still beat the top teams
and it gives us confidence to play
another game on Thursday.’
‘We have another semi-final to
book in the Europa League and
hopefully we are going to go
through.’

Real Madrid not focused on just Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder

Real Madrid will not solely focus
their attentions on high-profile
Galatasaray duo Didier Drogba and
Wesley Sneijder during
Wednesday's Champions League
encounter, according to Los
Blancos midfielder Sami Khedira.
Galatasaray head to the Santiago
Bernabeu to face Real Madrid in
the first leg of the last 16 tie as
clear underdogs, but are boosted
by having the experience of Drogba
and Sneijder among their number,
both of whom have won the
competition.
Drogba, who clinched victory in the
Champions League final for
Chelsea last season, and Sneijder
will be the clear threats for Real
Madrid over the two legs, although
Khedira is wary of the other
Galatasaray players who will test
the Spanish champions.
The 25-year-old has outlined
Hamit Altintop, formerly of Real
Madrid, as an opponent with the
potential to cause Real Madrid
problems, and Khedira will not be
taking the Turkish giants lightly,
despite Real Madrid's position as
favourites.
"Those two players [Drogba and
Sneijder] have brought a new
quality to the team, but they have
other great players," he told the
Uefa Champions League Magazine .
"For example [Hamit] Altintop, who
I know, and who scored in their
last match [against Schalke]. It is
always difficult to play against
Turkish teams, so we must focus
on the whole team and take it
seriously, not just focus on Drogba
or Snejider.
"If we do, I'm sure we'll get to the
semi-finals."

Why Chelsea should stick with Fernando Torres

When Fernando Torres joined
Chelsea from Liverpool for £50
million, many expected great
things from the Premier League's
record signing.
Unfortunately, the only nickname
he has received since joining the
Stamford Bridge outfit in January
2011 is the '£50 million flop'.
The main reason for this is the fact
that he has only scored 14 goals
in his 74 games for Chelsea. Since
selling Didier Drogba, Chelsea have
had a bit of trouble getting a
striker to score goals and Frank
Lampard currently tops the scoring
charts for Chelsea with 12 goals in
the Premier League compared to
Torres' seven.
The reasons for redemption?
Torres' goals in the Champions
and Europa Leagues. The Spanish
international striker put the final
nail in Barcelona's coffin by
scoring in the 90th minute to
ensure Chelsea went through to
the Champions League final last
season, beating Bayern Munich on
penalties to be crowned
champions.
A very similar event happened
against Steaua Bucharest this
season, when Torres scored in the
71st minute to play his part in
securing Chelsea's passage into
the next round, even if he did miss
a penalty 15 minutes later.
The truth is, however many vital
goals he scores, Chelsea need
someone who is consistent and
Torres isn't that guy. Having said
that, it seems that the goal and
kick to the nose against Steaua
Bucharest had him pumped up for
the last 20 minutes of the game,
and that was arguably the best 20
minutes we've seen from Torres
since he joined the west London
side.
Has this sparked the return of a
once unstoppable striker? Torres'
performance at Southampton on
Saturday suggests otherwise, but
we need to give him a second
chance to see if he's capable of
returning to the form that
prompted Chelsea's mega-rich
Russian owner Roman Abramovich
to rubber stamp a £50m move to
lure him from Liverpool.
What do you guys think? Do the
important goals outweigh Torres'
lack of consistency and failure to
find the net on a regular basis? Or
should Abramovich look to sell 'El
Nino' in the summer after a
disappointing stint in the capital?
Only time will tell.

Alaba and Muller put Bayern on brink of last four

Bayern Munich 2 Juventus 0
Bayern Munich’s bid to reach a
third Champions League final in
four years remains on track after
they earned a deserved victory
over Juventus in the first leg of
their quarter-final clash last night
at the Allianz Arena.

A goal inside the first minute from
David Alaba — who broke Irish
hearts while on international duty
with Austria last week — set
Bayern on their way and Thomas
Muller added a second just after
the hour mark as the German
giants built a healthy advantage to
take to Italy for their return leg.
Arjen Robben, who started on the
bench but was thrown into the
action after just 16 minutes due to
an injury to Toni Kroos, said he
was happy with the result.
“When we spoke about the game
before we said we couldn’t
concede a goal, that was the
important thing and in the end 2-0
at home, good advantage,” he
said.
“I think it was a very good game
to watch, because both teams were
pressing forward and it was almost
one against one all over the pitch.
“I think there was a period in the
first half, just after I came on,
where they made some mistakes
and we had some good chances. It
was just a bit unfortunate that we
didn’t score another goal,” he
continued.
Indeed, following their 9-2 mauling
of Hamburg at the weekend,
confidence was high and they
could hardly have had a better
start when Alaba picked up the
ball 30 yards from goal before
unleashing a left-footed effort
which, after clipping the end of
Arturo Vidal’s boot, swerved past
Buffon and nestled in the bottom
corner.
Juve might have felt a little
unlucky to have conceded in that
fashion but they could consider
themselves fortunate not to have
conceded more during a half that
Bayern controlled.
With their tails up, the Germans
were employing a shoot-on-sight
policy and another effort from
outside the box led to their second
in the 63rd minute.
Buffon kept out Luiz Gustavo’s
initial effort but the rebound was
picked up by Mario Mandzukic and
he laid the ball back into the
centre for Muller to tap into an
empty net.
Buffon might well have kept Juve’s
hopes of turning the tie around
alive when he produced a superb
one-handed save to deny Muller a
second in the 90th minute. Time
will tell how crucial the miss could
be.
BAYERN MUNICH: Neuer, Lahm,
Van Buyten, Dante, Alaba,
Schweinsteiger, Gustavo, Muller,
Kroos (Robben 16), Ribery (Shaqiri
90), Mandzukic (Gomez 90).
JUVENTUS: Buffon, Barzagli,
Bonucci, Chiellini, Lichtsteiner,
Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Peluso
(Pogba 75), Matri (Vucinic 65),
Quagliarella (Giovinco 65).
Referee: Mark Clattenburg
(England).

PSG 2 - Barcelona 2: It’s not all over yet for Beckham the history man

The 37-year-old became the first
Englishman to play in the
competition for four different clubs
– Manchester United, Real Madrid,
AC Milan – and now Paris Saint-
Germain.
And a last-gasp goal by Blaise
Matuidi in the Parc des Princes
last night meant Beckham and PSG
have an even chance when they
travel to Barcelona for the second
leg next Wednesday.
Beckham lined up for his return to
Champions League action for the
first time in three years, and only
his second start for his new club
since joining them on a five-month
deal in January.
Beckham, given a defensive
midfield role by coach Carlo
Ancelotti, was his usual
industrious self. He chased and
harried with all the enthusiasm of
a 20-year-old and showed
glimpses of his superb passing.
But he could not stamp his
authority on the game and picked
up a second-half booking, before
being substituted after 70 minutes.
Barcelona – boosted by the return
of coach Tito Vilanova after a two-
month absence undergoing
chemotherapy for throat cancer –
struck in the 38th minute.
Dani Alves’s defence-splitting pass
with the outside of his right foot
found Lionel Messi, who rifled
home a low angled shot. It was his
eighth Champions League goal of
the season and 57th in all
competitions.
Messi was forced off at half-time
with a hamstring problem and PSG
equalised in controversial
circumstances 11 minutes from
time. Thiago Motta thumped a
header against the bar and Zlatan
Ibrahimovic, clearly offside, slotted
home the rebound, with German
referee Wolfgang Stark ignoring
Barca’s protests.Then PSG keeper
Salvatore Sirigu tripped Alexis
Sanchez and Xavi scored the
penalty.
It looked all over for PSG but with
seconds remaining Matuidi’s
speculative shot from the edge of
the box took a slight deflection
and wrong-footed Victor Valdes,
who could only help it in to the
net.

PSG 2-2 Barcelona: Matuidi hands PSG a lifeline

Blaise Matuidi scored in the dying
seconds of a tense encounter at
the Par Des Princes to give Paris
Saint-Germain a lifeline to carry to
the return leg at Camp Nou in a
week’s time as PSG attempt to get
through to the semifinals of the
Champions League and show that
their team is not just a lavish
assortment of players, but indeed
champion material. A match in
which Lionel Messi got his
customary goal, Ibrahimovic
equalized through a vengeful strike
against his former team and just
when everyone thought that the tie
had been settled after a Xavi
penalty, Matuidi, having been
suspended for the second leg after
being yellow-carded, gave his side
a present to take to the party at
the Camp Nou and hopefully, do
what only one side managed to do
this whole season or for that
matter only a handful of sides
could do in the last few years –
beat Barcelona at their home.
And yes, Messi picked up an injury
during the match which might still
be the biggest news to emerge out
of Paris depending on the
seriousness of the injury.
Starting Lineups
PSG (4-4-2) : Sirigu – Jallet, Alex,
Silva, Maxwell – Moura, Matuidi,
Beckham, Pastore – Lavezzi,
Ibrahimovic
Ibrahimovic getting his suspension
ban reduced to just one match was
the big news in the build up to
this fixture as that meant he can
start against Barca, his bitter old
club. Beckham starting was
probably mildly surprising, but
maybe the thought process was
that his experience in these big
games could influence the rest of
the team, most of whom are
relatively new to this big stage.
Other than that, Ancelotti did not
tinker too much.
Barcelona (4-3-3) : Valdes –
Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Alba –
Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta – Sanchez,
Messi, Villa
Xavi and Alba who were both
major injury concerns after
returning from international duties
started the match. Pedro has been
suspended after receiving two
yellow cards. So Sanchez replaces
him. Otherwise, it is the same
starting eleven that mounted the
epic comeback against Milan.
Tactics and Analysis
There were rumours going around
that Mourinho had sent Ancelotti
videos and tips as to how to beat
Barcelona and that PSG have even
practised those tips in the build up
to this match. Whether or not that
is true, those tactics are not really
top-secret or patented. To put it
briefly, defend with discipline, soak
up the pressure, try and disrupt
the passing rhythm and score on
the counter-attack. And PSG have
Ibra to hold the long balls up
front, have Lucas Moura and
Lavezzi to add pace to the wings,
Matuidi to do all the dirty work
and yet contribute to the attack,
so one could say the plan suits
them very ideally which was
evident in the first 15 minutes of
play.
It took PSG all of 5 minutes to
create their first clear opportunity
when Lavezzi found himself in the
thick of things and the ball hit the
post after it clipped off Busquets
who hurried back to defend. The
game began to settle into a rhythm
as time went on with Barca trying
to patiently find a way through the
defence and PSG trying to hit them
on the counter-attack. On the
counter-attack, Lucas Moura
proved to be a handful with his
pace and Ibra should have done
better after Moura laid off a very
good ball only for Ibra to shoot
wide.
Messi fires it in with his left foot
The Messi moment came soon
after as Dani Alves produced a
moment of genius to curl in a
wonderful pass with the outside of
his right foot into the penalty area
after a clearance from a corner.
The ball found the left leg of Messi
and Messi duly obliged. He
smashed it into the net to give
Barca the lead. Usually when
Barca takes the lead, teams open
up quite a bit as they have to
score, which plays to Barca’s
advantage. This tie was no
different and there were a lot of
“ooohhs” when Messi tried to curl
a shot into the far corner which
was just off target. By this time,
the end of the first half was near.
Barca ended the half with virtually
ten men as Messi was engaged in
a conversation with Tito and as
Fabregas started warming up
along the touchline, the possibility
of an injured Messi started
creeping in.
Surely enough, Cesc substituted
Messi at the start of the second
half and the absence of Messi
soon started to tell. Though not at
their mesmeric best, Barca had two
big chances to double their goal
tally, both of which fell to Alexis
Sanchez. But as has become the
norm these days, he looks
incapable of putting a ball in the
net. In the meantime, PSG began
stringing a few passes together
and soon enough, a series of set-
pieces, Barca’s worst nightmares
these days, resulted in an equaliser
for PSG. Thiago Silva, who had
been excellent throughout the
match headed a free-kick onto the
post and the rebound fell kindly for
Ibra to score, though he was in an
offside position when Silva headed
the ball.

Substitutions were made and the
match headed into the final stages
when Alexis’ pace was finally put
to some use as he knocked the ball
out of Sirigu’s reach to claim a
stonewall penalty. Xavi sent the
keeper the wrong way and the tie
looked settled once and for all.
However, PSG had the last laugh
as Matuidi smashed one into the
penalty area in the final minute of
injury time and Valdes simply
could not adjust to the slight
deflection the ball took.
Barca will probably feel that they
did not have the rub of the green,
what with PSG’s first goal being
offside and second goal being
scored in the final few seconds
with the help of a deflection. PSG
on the other hand might feel that
they have been rewarded for their
hard work and their persistence. At
the end of the day, the tie is far
from settled and both teams now
have all to play for at the Camp
Nou in a week’s time.
Man of the Match: Thiago Silva
Silva was literally everywhere on
the pitch. He put in tackles left,
right and centre of the field, tried
to bring the ball out of the defence
and run into the final third with it
and rose higher than everyone else
to create the first goal. Even as
Xavi scored the penalty in the last
stages of the match, he was
spotted motivating his team-
mates that the match still has a
few minutes left and that the game
is not over. He took on the
responsibility of handling Messi
upon himself and probably did not
commit a single mistake in the
entire match.
Captain leading from the front
He showed Barcelona what they let
go last summer when Camp Nou
looked like his most probable
destination before PSG snapped
him up. A perfect captain’s
performance from arguably the
world’s best defender.

Microsoft's Pain in Spain Lies Mainly in Secure Boot

It's not exactly any secret that
Microsoft has had its fair share of
legal troubles over the years, many
of them arising from its pesky little
habit of finding ways to shut the
door on competitors. So when
Secure Boot came along in
Windows 8, many considered it
just a matter of time before a
formal complaint was made. Sure
enough, though it took perhaps
longer than one might have
expected, just such a complaint
was finally filed last week by
Hispalinux, a Spanish group of
8,000 Linux users and developers,
charging that Secure Boot is
nothing more than an "obstruction
mechanism."

Beckham wants PSG positive thinking to beat Messi and co but team-mate Ibrahimovic gets physical

David Beckham hopes a bit of
positive thinking will help Paris St
Germain stand up to the might of
Barcelona and Messi in the
Champions League this week,
though it seems team-mate Zlatan
Ibrahimovic has suggested
roughing them up may be a better
option.
The Ligue 1 leaders host the 2009
and 2011 champions in the
Champions League quarter-finals
on Tuesday, the first time the
Parisien outfit have reached the
last eight of the competition.
Despite significant investment in
the last two years, PSG go into the
tie as underdogs, such is the
experience and depth of talent
available to the Catalans, with the
majority of their squad having
played a part in previous triumphs.

    Beckham appreciates the stand
out talent at Barca is Messi, the
four-time Ballon D’Or winner, but
the former England captain has
demanded his team-mates believe
they are capable of getting the
better of the collective.
The former Real Madrid man, who
has 105 Champions League
appearances behind him, told
French television: ‘They’re perhaps
the best team in the world, and
[Lionel] Messi is the best player,
but he’s not out there on the pitch
alone.
‘We have to convince ourselves it’s
possible. We’re going to meet the
challenge. We mustn’t go out
there thinking we’re going to lose.’
           Ibrahimovic admits his side will
come up against the best team
and, in Messi, the best player in
the world today - and possibly, in
each case, the greatest ever.
‘Today, for sure Leo Messi’s the
best player,’ he said. ‘Maybe they
should put the name Messi on the
Ballon D’Or, he has a couple of
years more to win it.
‘As an active player, it’s difficult to
say he’s the best who’s ever
played football. Messi has to quit
football, then you can decide if
he’s the best or not.
‘It will be a difficult game, they are
probably the best team today and
probably the best team ever
playing football on this planet.

‘It will be very exciting to try to
find how to play, how to disturb
them. Milan played a good tactical
game and disturbed Barcelona in
their game.’
On Beckham, the Swede, who is
available for the match after UEFA
overturned a two-game ban
stemming from his red card in the
first leg of the last 16 against
Valencia, added: ‘He has big
quality and he’s a fighter, he has a
big heart.
‘With two months left, we are still
playing for so many competitions
and that’s where he becomes so
important, not all our players have
this experience of winning
trophies.’

Preview: Real Madrid vs. Galatasaray

With their chances of retaining
their La Liga title having all but
evaporated, the Champions League
and the Copa del Rey are Real
Madrid's best chances of adding
more silverware to the trophy
cabinet this season.
They are the most successful side
in the history of the competition
and are currently on course to win
their 10th European crown.
Standing in their way in the
quarter-finals are Turkish outfit
Galatasaray, who are likely to start
with former Madrid midfielders
Wesley Sneijder and Hamit
Altıntop .
Didier Drogba is also likely to start
for Gala, who have not reached the
last four of this tournament since
1989.
Meanwhile, hosts Madrid have an
injury concern over young centre-
back Raphael Varane . Should the
French international not shake off
his back problem, his role would
go to Pepe.
These two sides have met on three
previous occasions, with Istanbul-
based Galatasaray leading Madrid
2-1.

Chelsea to Appoint Jose Mourinho as New Manager, £60m Cristiano Ronaldo Bid to Follow

Bernabeu boss set for Stamford
Bridge return.
Chelsea are reportedly set to
welcome back Jose Mourinho as
Blues boss this summer and the
Portuguese manager’s first move
on returning to Stamford Bridge
will be an astonishing £60m bid
for Real Madrid star Cristiano
Ronaldo.
The Sunday Express believe that
Mourinho is all but signed up to
takeover from interim boss Rafa
Benitez at the end of the season
and that such a move would have
been completed earlier had Real
Madrid not beaten Man United to
book their spot in the Champions
League quarter-finals.
The 50 year old will look to leave
the Bernabeu on good terms by
looking to clinch either a Copa Del
Rey or Champions League title
before he moves back to West
London. However those good
terms wouldn’t last all that long if
Mourinho then returns in pursuit of
the club’s prized asset Cristiano
Ronaldo.
This source claims that Ronaldo is
not happy at Real Madrid and
Mourinho believes a bid in the
region of £60m, well within Roman
Abramovich’s budget, could be
enough to persuade the La Liga
champions to sell.
Ronaldo has been an incredible
success since his £80m move to
Real Madrid in the summer of
2009, notching up a phenomenal
190 goals in 188 games. A move
back to the Premier League would
be something of a surprise,
especially a move back to any
other side in the English top tier
than Man United.
Abramovich knows his side could
dearly do with a proven marksman
to spearhead the Blues attack, his
£50m investment in Fernando
Torres has backfired in a big way
and a move to place Ronaldo in an
attack that also includes Juan
Mata and Eden Hazard would
clearly be a huge statement of
intent by Chelsea and one that
could re-ignite the club’s push to
mount a genuine Premier League
title push.
